Sam Shoemaker age 82, former Portland resident passed away Wednesday April 29, 2020 in Hamilton Trace Nursing Home in Fishers, Indiana. He was born in Plymouth, Indiana on October 24, 1937 the son of Ralph and Helen (Ferguson) Shoemaker. He was married on August 2, 1964 to Sue Olson and she preceded him in death on December 19, 2000. He was a 1955 Portland High School graduate and received his Masters Degree from Ball State University.
He was a teacher and coached basketball, football and golf at Gray High School from 1953-61 and at Portland Jr. High School from 1962-74. He was principal at Pennville Jr. and Sr. High School from 1974-75 and then assistant principal at Jay County High School from 1975-93. He became director of adult education and executive director at John Jay Center for Learning in 1993.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school with his wife, Portland Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Committee. Served on the First National Bank Board, President of Portland Country Club and was three time club champion.
Surviving are three sons Matthew Shoemaker (wife Lisa) of Noblesville, Scott Shoemaker of Athens, Alabama and Dr. Aaron Shoemaker (wife Kristen) of Noblesville, one sister Donna Bookout (husband Darl) of Muncie, Nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren
Private services will be held in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Greg Rittenhouse presiding. Burial will be in the Green Park Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the John Jay Center for Learning
