Rex Olen Powell, age 71, of rural Portland passed away on Tuesday December 20, 2022 in the IU Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.  He was born in Portland on March 18, 1951 the son of John "Jack" and Donna (Maitlen) Powell.  He was married on September 2, 2000 to Deana Ullom who survives. He was a graduate of Redkey High School.  Rex was retired after thirty four years with General Telephone and did private phone contracting.  He also was a truck driver for Meschbergers.  He was a professor at Seminole Community Collage in Seminole, Florida.  Rex was a staff sergeant in the US Airforce during Vietnam, member of American Legion Post #211, Commander of the DAV, member of Halfway Lodge in Redkey and was a 33 ^rd Degree Mason.

Surviving are his wife Deana, two daughters LeAnn Robbins (husband Steve) of Redkey and Lisa Lanning of Redkey, sister Lois Nauman of Gaston, mother in law Mary Ullom of Portland, nephew John Nauman of Gaston, niece Jennifer Helman of Michigan, two grandsons and five granddaughters.  He was preceded in death by a grandson Tyler Robbins.

Funeral services will be Wednesday December 28, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Dave McClellan presiding.  Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Redkey with military graveside honors.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.  Memorials can be made to the Jay County Cancer Society.
