Millard Jacob Schwartz, age 99, former Portland, Indiana resident, passed away May 11, 2020 in Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur. Millard was born in Adams County on April 4, 1921, the son of Jacob J. and Lena (Habegger) Schwartz. For the last 12 years, he has been an active resident of Swiss Village, Berne, IN.

He was married November 27, 1943 to Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Flesher. After more than 70 years of marriage, she passed away on March 1, 2014. Millard retired after 38 years with Jay County REMC as an electric lineman and construction foreman. Following his retirement, he continued farming and remained an enthusiastic volunteer in civic and community affairs. Millard served with the US Army in Europe during WW II and was a Battle of the Bulge veteran. He received a Jay County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and Portland Kiwanis Club. He was affiliated for more than 70 years with American Legion Post #211 and, for many of those years, was a member of the Post's Color Guard unit.

Surviving are two sons, James E. Schwartz (Jane) of Allentown, PA and William J. Schwartz (Linda) of St. Louis, MO, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Green Park Cemetery, Portland. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Baird-Freeman Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Swiss Village Samaritan Fund, The Portland Foundation or Asbury United Methodist Church.
