Michael Phillips, 65, of Portland and formerly of Granger, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Envive of Berne.
Born in East St. Louis on April 21, 1961, Michael was the son of Andy and Mamie Phillips. A cross-country truck driver by trade, he spent much of his life on the open road, but music was where his heart truly found its home. An unforgettable singer, Michael performed with several blues bands throughout the years, sharing his talent and bringing joy to everyone who heard him. His music was a reflection of who he was.
Michael was also a collector of many things, a lover of travel and cars, and—most of all—a friend to everyone he met. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and his kindness, humor, and warm spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved, Elsa Works of Portland; daughter, Patricia Phillips of South Bend, her children, Daniel Phillips and Naomi Willis; sister, Carolyn Powell of South Bend; Elsa's children, Jaimee Bruggeman (Kevin) of Bryant, Carmen Works of South Bend, and Rhonda Works of South Bend; Elsa's nine grandchildren; and several cousins to whom he was especially close.
Michael's life will be remembered through the music he shared, the roads he traveled, and the many people whose lives he touched along the way.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday September 27, 2026 at 3:00 PM at the Clay Social Club in Roseland, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
