Melvin L. Gillespie Age 85, 125 West Second Street Portland passed away Monday evening in the Jay County Hospital. He was born in Portland October 9, 1930 the son of John and Blanch (James) Gillespie. He was married June 25, 1955 to Phyllis Elmore who survives. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, 1948 Portland High School graduate, member of American Legion Post #211 where he served with the Honor Guard, VFW of Salamonia and DAV. He was retired from Rodefelds Auto Parts in 1996 and before that worked for Elbersons Auto Parts both in Portland.
Surviving are his wife Phyllis, one son Randy Gillespie (wife Deb) of Portland and one granddaughter Randa Gillespie. One son Eric Gillespie preceded in death.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 7:00 PM in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Harris presiding. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Burial will be Friday at 10:00 AM in the Green Park Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #211. Memorials can be made to State of the Heart Hospice, Jay County Library or Choice of the Donor.
