Louanna J. Hurst, age 96, of Portland passed away on Tuesday January 16, 2024 in Albany Healthcare and Rehabilitation.  She was born in Portland on October 9, 1927 the daughter of Cornelius and Esther (Geesaman) Valentine.  She was married on June 24, 1944 to Jesse Hurst and he passed away on July 17, 2003.  Louanna worked in the Soil Conservation Office and JC Murphys.  She was a member of Gold Star Sister, Business and Professional Women's Club, American Legion Aux., Eagles Lodge and Moose Lodge.  She attended Center Church, Pennville High School and liked dancing, cats and raising bees for honey.

Surviving are one son Jesse Hurst Jr. of Muncie, great niece and caregiver Teresa Alig (husband Dave) of Portland and three grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son Jeffrey Hurst.

Funeral services will be Friday January 19th at 2:00 PM in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Eads presiding.  Burial will be in the Center Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.  Memorials can be made to the Jay County Humane Society.
