John Hugh Hammitt age 92, of rural Bryant passed away Wednesday March 17, 2021 at IU Jay County Hospital in Portland. Born on November 5, 1928 he was the son of Hugh and Edna (Hunt) Hammitt. He was married on June 23, 1950 to M. Onnalee Smith and she passed away on July 9, 2001. He was retired from Magnavox in Fort Wayne as a production controller. He served in the US Navy, member of American Legion Post #211 where he served on the honor guard. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bryant and Jay County Historical Society. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, woodworking and genealogy.

Surviving are one son Robert Hammitt (wife Mary) of Burlington, Wisconsin, one daughter Rebecca Landers (husband Mike) of Portland, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Private family services will be held in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with burial in the Gravel Hill Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Jay County Historical Society or Redeemer Lutheran Church.
